Help with plexiglass?
im trying to make a display cabinet and i need help with plxiglass. ive never worked with it before. ive heard things like it cracks easily while cutting it or drilling it and stuff like that. i need to make 2 doors. roughly 40x60. were can i buy custom cut plexiglass and how would i go about putting screws through it.would a sliding door be easier to make then a hinged door?

You don't indicate where you are, but I'm assuming you mean 40 cm x 60 cm rather than inches, and that you're British or Canadian rather than Australian, because they'd probably call it Perspex, not that it makes a huge difference. Yes sliding doors are almost always easier than hinged ones, but both are possible with plexiglass. Actually, pretty much anything is possible with plexiglass because it can be bent, routed, cut, jointed, and polished. Any competent cabinet shop can cut your pieces for you. A place that manufactures displays might be best because they will have the special blades that cut acrylic without chipping, but a new or freshly sharpened crosscut table saw will also do the job if care is taken to go slow but not so slow that remelting takes place behind the blade. Once your pieces are cut, you can sand and polish the edges, going from 80 or 100 grit down to 220 or 320. Then you can use 0000 steel wool or a 3M Scotch Brite pad to to remove almost all of the sanding marks. If you want a mirror finish on the edges you can get polishing compound at an auto repair store or use what the pros use, which is the novus system. Once your edges are cleaned up and there are no sharp corners, you can drill for your hinges, which is ideally done with a bit made for acrylic. It looks like a regular twist bit, except it has a 60 degree point which prevents chipping and cracking. But it can also be done with a new black oxide bit if you clamp a board to the back of the piece to prevent blowout when the bit comes through. You can also tap threads into plexiglass if that will make anything easier. All of these steps are done with the paper or plastic film still on the plexi, because it gives you something to make marks on and protects the material from scratches. Keep or buy some scrap pieces to experiment with. Regular acrylic is pretty easy to cut, but polycarbonate, which is the same thing they make bank windows, safety glasses, and motorcycle helmets out of can be a little grabby when first touching a moving saw blade. Some display cases use polycarbonate, (brand name Lexan) to prevent tampering as it is almost impossible to break. When I taught women's woodworking classes at Home Depot, I would hit a pair of old safety glasses with a hammer and they would dent, but not shatter. It's 2 or 3 times as expensive as regular acrylic, but very durable, though easier to scratch. Speaking of which, never use paper towels or tissue to clean acrylic. Only clean, soft cloths and water or special cleaners, but never anything with ammonia because it can damage it. Novus makes an excellent cleaner, which might be a good investment if you buy the scratch removers at the same time. Sorry about the length, I know I'm leaving a lot out.

What size AC unit would I need?
I am looking to Air Condition my shop, and I was wondering what size I should get? It has limited insulation, but is a single room/ one story building. It is actually a garage/ shop. It is 40x60 ft, with two windows, and two doors. Thanks-

Hi There, The link below is for an air conditioner sizing worksheet. which would be very accurate. You enter the information and it automatically calculates the A/C size you would need. The rule of thumb is 1 ton (1200 BTU/Hr) for every 500 square feet. You have 2400 square feet so it would be about 5760 BTU. I would go for a 6000 BTU unit. I would do the calculations above and compare with the 6000 BTU "rule of thumb" answer. Hope this helps, Al
